Correct me if I'm wrong, but current Ubuntu packages (
http://debian.sflphone.org/dists/jaunty/universe/source/) are already split
between -commn, -gnome and -kde.
What am I missing?

I agree with you, but I was thinking about how could I build easily two
separate "gnome-only" and "kde-only" binary packages from my pkgsrc without
downloading the official source package more than once: splitting source
packages would be the most obvious solution.
By now I think I'll opt for the "dumb" way of downloading the same source
multiple times, hoping that support for split packages will be added soon to
official Arch packaging tools.
